Jon Irabagon remains one of the most uncompromising voices in contemporary jazz. A first-generation Filipino American from Chicago, he is deeply influenced by the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) tradition\u2014including the legacies of Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, and Muhal Richard Abrams\u2014as well as the bold, exploratory saxophone tradition of his hometown. Since winning the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition in 2008, Irabagon has pursued a fiercely original, conversational approach through his own label, Irabbagast Records.<\/p>\n

Focus Out is a forceful statement from his long-running quartet. Irabagon plays alto saxophone, Matt Mitchell handles piano and Fender Rhodes, Chris Lightcap plays electric bass, and Dan Weiss is on drums. On several tracks, the group is joined by jazz heavyweights such as trumpeter Dave Ballou and tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin. Rather than taking turns as guest soloists, Ballou and McCaslin blend seamlessly into a dense, multidimensional front line. The interplay between Irabagon and McCaslin is especially compelling: McCaslin\u2019s muscular tenor provides a firm counterweight to the nimble, shape-shifting improvisations of Irabagon\u2019s alto.<\/p>\n

The album opens with \u201cMorning Star,\u201d establishing a mood of careful inquiry. The piece unfolds as a soundscape of angular, dizzying alto lines and uncompromising rhythms, shifting without warning through the band\u2019s rapidly changing textures. The title track, \u201cFocus Out,\u201d deepens this impulse; Mitchell\u2019s electric piano adds a shimmering layer to Irabagon\u2019s sharp-edged tone. Meanwhile, the front line draws together jazz, funk, and blues-tinged gospel grooves, maintaining a powerful forward drive without crowding the space\u2014even as Irabagon\u2019s bulldozing saxophone lines sweep through the music with subtle grace.<\/p>\n

On \u201cPaper Planes,\u201d the band puts timbre ahead of traditional melodic development. Kokayi contributes an extended vocal performance, weaving syllabic improvisation into the sound texture as a fifth instrument. In a context rooted in AACM aesthetics, it is a formally coherent choice\u2014but is his presence a necessary anchor, or does it simply add another pleasing layer of complexity? The music raises the question without feeling any need to answer it.<\/p>\n

By contrast, \u201cEvening Star\u201d is a powerful, expansive journey built on sheer force. Its free-jazz attack reveals Irabagon\u2019s complete command of dynamics. \u201cIndigo Stains,\u201d meanwhile, gives the musicians a more direct setting for emotionally charged conversation.<\/p>\n

Throughout the album, Irabagon refuses easy resolutions. Chicago\u2019s experimental tradition flickers in the background, but Focus Out is ultimately his own statement: a challenging yet deeply rewarding listen, shaped by fearless improvisation and an unceasing creative spirit.<\/p>\n
