Mysterious Planet Shishi-Dza-Dza (Leo)!

Formed in 2025, this performance ensemble brings together drums, saxophone/CDJ and Japanese shishimai lion dance. Lion-dance traditions are found throughout East Asia. This project summons Japan’s distinctive, independently evolved form from the Far East through percussion, wind instruments and electronics.

The lion descends and dances to the drums; the lion descends and dances to the saxophone,
the lion descends and dances to the sounds of the CDJ; the lion descends and dances with all things.

Dance, dance, dance. Dance with abandon!

❑ Mamoru Hoshi / Cello & Lion Dance

Born in 1959, Hoshi spent his early childhood in Africa, in what was then Rhodesia and is now Zimbabwe. Alongside playing cello and electric cello in a variety of ensembles, he works to pass on Kanda Bayashi, a traditional shrine-festival music designated an intangible cultural asset of Tokyo, performing on the shinobue flute and in lion dance.

In pursuit of the joy of dance and music, he has explored Celtic, Arabic, Turkish, South American and other folk traditions. Meeting leading Japanese jazz pianist Yosuke Yamashita opened new perspectives on improvisation. He is also an active composer and has continued to publish solo work on YouTube in recent years. His books include A Guide to Listening-Stimulation Fiction (under the pen name Takehiko Ozawa); his latest collection is Stories About Food.

He plays the cello and electric cello in various groups, while also carrying on the tradition of Kanda-bayashi, a Tokyo Intangible Cultural Property, music used for shrine festivals, playing the shinobue flute and performing the lion dance. Seeking the bliss of dance and music, he is drawn to Celtic, Arabic, Turkish and South American folk music, and other folk music, and his encounter with Japan’s leading jazz pianist, Yamashita Yosuke, opened his eyes to improvisation. He is also an active composer, and in recent years has been releasing his own works on YouTube. His publications include “A Guide to Auditory Stimulation Novels” (pen name: Takehiko Okusawa).
