Marilyn Crispell
Marilyn Crispell is an American pianist, composer, and educator, and an important voice in contemporary free jazz and improvised music. Her piano language combines intensity with lyrical lines, exploring the relationship among free improvisation, structure, and space. She was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2025 and received the Jazz Legacy Award established by the Jazz Foundation of America and the Mellon Foundation in 2026.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Baltimore, Crispell studied piano at the Peabody Conservatory before graduating from the New England Conservatory, where she focused on classical piano and composition. In her late twenties, listening to John Coltrane led her deeply into jazz. She later studied with Charlie Banacos and was inspired by the improvisational practices of musicians such as Cecil Taylor, gradually developing a distinctive free-playing style. From 1977, she lived in Woodstock, New York, where she studied and taught at the Creative Music Studio and encountered avant-garde artists including Anthony Braxton.
Since emerging internationally in the late 1970s, Crispell has worked as a soloist and in trios, large improvising ensembles, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. She joined Anthony Braxton’s Creative Music Orchestra and played for years in his quartet; other collaborators include the Reggie Workman Ensemble, Barry Guy New Orchestra, Roscoe Mitchell, and Wadada Leo Smith. Her first solo release, Live in Berlin, appeared in 1982, with violinist Billy Bang, bassist Peter Kowald, and drummer John Betsch. She is known both for high-energy solos and for developing finely detailed, spacious chamber-like conversations.
Crispell’s work extends beyond jazz repertoire. She has performed and recorded music by contemporary composers including Robert Cogan, John Cage, and Pauline Oliveros, appeared with New York City Opera in Anthony Davis’s opera X, and collaborated with artists in film, video, dance, and poetry. Since 2018 she has been a member of Joe Lovano’s Trio Tapestry, appearing on the group’s self-titled ECM album and subsequent recordings. She has also led improvisation workshops and lectures in the United States, Europe, Canada, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, co-directed the Vancouver Creative Music Institute, and taught at the Banff Centre’s international jazz workshop.
In March 2026, Crispell and Swedish bassist Anders Jormin released Memento, continuing their subtle and open-ended improvisational dialogue. Her career has been recognized with a Guggenheim Fellowship in composition, multiple New York Foundation for the Arts grants, and commissions from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust. Through her continued performance and teaching, she treats improvisation as a compositional process shaped by listening, memory, and spontaneous form.

Amina Claudine Myers
Amina Claudine Myers is an American jazz pianist, organist, singer, composer, arranger, and educator. Her distinctive musical language joins jazz improvisation with gospel, blues, and spiritual traditions. Born in 1942 in Blackwell, Arkansas, she began studying piano as a child and encountered gospel music in church. She later attended Philander Smith College in Arkansas, where she studied music education.
While teaching in Chicago, Myers remained active in music and joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in 1966. Within this avant-garde community, she developed a personal voice that combined composition and improvisation, writing for voices, instruments, and choir. After moving to New York in the 1970s, she expanded into theater and stage work, taking part in an early production of the Broadway musical Ain’t Misbehavin’ and composing for several Off-Broadway productions.
As a bandleader, Myers has released Poems for Piano: The Piano Music of Marion Brown, Song for Mother E, Salutes Bessie Smith, The Circle of Time, Amina, In Touch, Augmented Variations, and Sama Rou: Songs from My Soul. She moves freely among piano, Hammond B-3 organ, and voice, often beginning with blues and gospel melodies before opening into free improvisation and avant-garde jazz. Her long list of collaborators includes Lester Bowie, Muhal Richard Abrams, Archie Shepp, Charlie Haden, Henry Threadgill, and Bill Laswell. With Wadada Leo Smith, she recorded Central Park’s Mosaics of Reservoir, Lake, Paths and Gardens (2024).
Myers has performed across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, while continuing to teach through workshops and residencies. Her honors include the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation’s 2021 Living Legacy Award. In 2024, the National Endowment for the Arts named her an NEA Jazz Master, recognizing her as an important figure in the preservation and continuation of jazz.

Adam O'Farrill
O’Farrill comes from a distinguished musical family. His grandfather Chico O’Farrill was a major Afro-Cuban composer and arranger; his father Arturo O’Farrill is a pianist, composer, and leader of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra; his mother Alison Deane is a classical pianist; and his older brother Zack O’Farrill is a drummer and composer. Adam grew up around classical, jazz, and Afro-Latin music. He began piano at six and switched to trumpet at eight. After studying at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, he attended the Manhattan School of Music and established a distinctive place among New York’s new generation of experimental jazz musicians.
He placed third in the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz trumpet competition and has collaborated with Rudresh Mahanthappa, Mary Halvorson, Anna Webber, Vijay Iyer, Tyshawn Sorey, Mulatu Astatke, Hiromi, Son Lux, and Samora Pinderhughes. As a bandleader, he explored the intersections of film, literature, Mexican folk music, and jazz improvisation on Stranger Days (2016) and El Maquech (2018). Visions of Your Other (2021) and the large-ensemble work For These Streets (2025) reveal a broader compositional vision. His 2026 release ELEPHANT and its deluxe edition continue to bring together trumpet, electronic sound, and chamber-like ensembles.
O’Farrill’s music resists a single geographic or stylistic label. He brings together the trumpet’s lyrical quality, displaced rhythms, intricate arrangements, and abstract timbres, turning familiar jazz language in unexpected directions. Changing collaborations keep his work open and evolving. His compositions have received support from the ASCAP Foundation, The Jazz Gallery, and Roulette, among others. He has also been named a Rising Star Trumpeter in the DownBeat Critics Poll and is one of the most closely watched voices in contemporary jazz trumpet.
