In the history of jazz piano, Art Tatum is a god, but Bud Powell is a prophet: he translated bebop’s language from the horns to the keyboard.

This self-titled album gathers Powell recordings from the late 1940s and early 1950s, the hottest years of his creativity. The speed and clarity of his right-hand lines are breathtaking; every note lands with needlepoint precision, yet a peculiar ease remains. Powell never needed to show off—he just happened to be faster than seemed human. In the solo on “Tempus Fugit,” the melody pours down like a waterfall, but every droplet seems placed with care.

What makes the album heartbreaking, though, is the faint sound of cracks beginning to form. In 1945, Powell was beaten in the head by police and spent the rest of his life dealing with mental illness and electroshock treatment. In some recordings, his playing seems to fall into mechanical repetition, as if his fingers were on autopilot while his spirit had briefly left his body. Those moments of absence are more tragic than any blazing solo.

Even so, when he is fully present—on the Latin-rhythm experiment “Un Poco Loco,” for example—his creativity still burns brightly. The syncopated chords in Powell’s left hand are more than accompaniment: they compete with the right hand for control, creating an inner dialogue and conflict. That is what makes his solo playing so distinctive. You are not simply hearing one person at the piano; you are hearing a person at war with himself.

If I were recommending a first Bud Powell album, this would not be the obvious choice; the Amazing Bud Powell series may be a better place to start. But if you want to hear a genius burning at the edge of destruction, this is the sound.
