Chet Baker’s singing was an accident from the start. In 1954, he was already the leading trumpet player of West Coast cool jazz, and handsome enough to audition for Hollywood. One day in the studio, someone encouraged him to sing a few lines. That moment added an unclassifiable wonder to jazz history.

Baker’s voice has no technical prowess. His range is narrow, his breath weak, and he occasionally sings out of tune. Yet that almost-fragile voice turns “My Funny Valentine” into a different song. Rodgers and Hart wrote it as a Broadway tune; Baker sings it like a half-public confession. You can hear someone lowering every defense, his voice as thin as a sheet of paper that could blow away at any moment.

“I Fall in Love Too Easily” goes further. The lyric is already direct, but Baker makes it sound even more desperate. His delivery is so languid it almost seems disrespectful to the melody, and that is precisely why each syllable feels like a secret that slipped out by mistake. Miles Davis reportedly looked down on Baker’s singing, but it is hard not to wonder if a little envy was mixed in. Miles spent a lifetime pursuing that kind of fragility on the trumpet; Baker had it as soon as he opened his mouth.

The arrangements are spare. Russ Freeman’s piano and Carson Smith’s bass seem to support Baker carefully, as if a strong accent might frighten him away. That restraint is exactly right. His voice does not need to be “enriched”; too much embellishment would damage its essence.

We know how the story later ended: drugs, poverty, and a fall from a hotel window in Amsterdam. That makes this album sound heavier still. It captures Chet Baker young, handsome, and unguarded—the voice he spent the rest of his life trying, and failing, to find again.
