Listen to this alongside Chet Baker Sings from 1954 and you may wonder whether the same person made both records. Forty years of drugs, prison, broken teeth, and a fall from a hotel window in Amsterdam separate them. Baker’s life feels like a film deliberately cut out of sequence, and these albums sound like its opening and closing scenes.

This 1994 My Funny Valentine is a collection of Baker’s later recordings. His sound is nothing like the creamy tone of his youth. The trumpet is dry and fragile, sometimes wavering on the edge of pitch, with little breath support. The voice is even more worn: the low register is rough as sandpaper, and the high notes are almost out of reach.

That damage gives the lyrics a new meaning. In “My Funny Valentine,” Baker sings, “Your looks are laughable.” From a young Baker, the line is a carefree flirtation; from the older Baker, it becomes a strange self-description. He knew he was no longer the beautiful young man. Wrinkles, illness, and the marks left by life are written into every note. But he does not hide them, soften them, or ask for pity.

Here, “I Fall in Love Too Easily” is nearly twice as slow as the version from thirty-nine years earlier. Every syllable is stretched to its limit, as if he were racing death—or as if he no longer cared about the outcome. The string arrangement occasionally turns too sweet, a common problem with Baker’s late recordings; someone always wants to put a layer of frosting over him. But his voice keeps piercing the wrapping and meeting you directly.

This is not easy background music. It asks you to be ready for something heavy: a person using the little strength he has left to sing a song he has performed hundreds of times as if it were the first and the last. Plenty of late recordings are poor, but Baker’s are a rare exception. His decline makes these songs more honest—sometimes so honest you may not want to hear them through.
