2026 Chengdu–Europe Cultural Season

May 14, 2026 shauncat

On the evening of May 9, the “Jazz Poland” concert of the 2026 Chengdu–Europe Cultural Season took place at Tianfu Art Park. Avant-garde electronic-jazz trio MM3, from Warsaw, Poland, brought an electrifying, futuristic performance to early-summer Chengdu. More than 1,000 local and international audience members enjoyed a musical journey across cultures amid lakeside breezes and shifting lights.

Founded in 2012, MM3 is a leading group in Poland’s experimental electronic music scene. Building on modern jazz, the trio blends electronic music, rock, and ambient sounds, combining traditional instruments with synthesizers and computer-generated effects. That evening, the acoustic textures of guitar, bass, and drums layered into electronic rhythms; the melodies shifted from delicate to soaring as the lights danced on the lake and electronic beats filled the space, drawing continuous applause.

During the performance, which lasted just over an hour, the band connected warmly with the audience. One music fan who had traveled especially for the show said: “It was my first time hearing electronic jazz outdoors by a lake. Every melodic turn was a surprise. To experience an international-level performance right here at home was a real thrill.”

MM3 guitarist Michal Milczarek said this was the band’s third visit to China. “Chengdu is a city full of cultural energy, and we really like it here,” he said. The long-standing cultural exchange between China and Poland has had a profound influence on the band’s development. “Coming to Chengdu as Polish musicians is an exceptionally unique and precious experience for us.”

The concert was also presented in collaboration with the “Jinniu Hot Sounds LIVE Lakeside Concert.” At the opening, performers from the Chengdu Peking Opera Research Institute presented Sichuan opera face-changing and fire-breathing feats, while local band Hot Palace set the mood with music inspired by Chinese traditions. Western avant-garde jazz shared the stage with Eastern intangible cultural heritage and traditional arts, vividly reflecting Chengdu’s open and inclusive cultural spirit.

In recent years, Chengdu and Poland have continued to engage through the Chengdu–Europe Cultural Season, presenting city-themed art exhibitions, jazz concerts, photography shows, and more. Chengdu’s Polish sister city of Łódź has also built an efficient trade corridor with Chengdu through the China–Europe Railway Express. MM3’s visit further enriched people-to-people exchange between the two sides.

“Cooperation continues to deepen in culture, education, the economy, and people-to-people exchange. We bring Polish artists to Chengdu and help more artists from Sichuan visit Poland,” said Piotr Nowotniak, Consul General of Poland in Guangzhou. Some universities in Chengdu now offer Polish-language courses, and young people in the city are increasingly interested in Polish culture. “Looking ahead, I hope both sides will explore more opportunities in emerging fields such as logistics, creative industries, and green technology.”
