Amaro Freitas Biography

Amaro Freitas · Born in Recife, Brazil, in 1991

Piano · Recife, Brazil

Amaro Freitas is a Brazilian jazz pianist and composer born in Recife, in northeastern Brazil, in 1991. He began studying piano at 12 with his father, a church bandleader, and decided to pursue jazz after seeing a video of Chick Corea. As a teenager, he saved money from wedding-band work and a call-center job to pay for lessons. His music combines northeastern Brazilian rhythms—including maracatu, frevo, and baião—with post-bop and modal jazz. His percussive piano technique has been praised by DownBeat as “keyboard playing that leaves audiences astonished.” His debut, Sangue Negro (2016), brought him wide attention, followed by Rasif (2018), Sankofa (2021), and Y’Y (2024), a tribute to the Amazon rainforest featuring Shabaka Hutchings and Jeff Parker, among others. In 2026, he became the first Brazilian artist to receive the Paul Acket Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
