Tyreek McDole Biography

Tyreek McDole is a Haitian-American jazz vocalist who grew up in Central Florida. With a warm, resonant baritone and a gift for storytelling, he has become an important voice of a new generation of jazz singers. His music honors the phrasing and language of classic jazz vocals while drawing on Caribbean culture, gospel, and contemporary improvisation. For McDole, singing is not simply a display of tone; it is a way to communicate, heal, and imagine together.

McDole first studied trumpet and percussion, then discovered a passion for singing while performing in high-school musicals. He won an outstanding vocalist award at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and received encouragement from Wynton Marsalis. He later studied jazz vocals at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with LaTanya Hall, Gary Bartz, Gerald Cannon, Eddie Henderson, Billy Hart, Sullivan Fortner, and others, gradually building a career in New York.

In 2023, McDole won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, becoming the second male singer to take first prize in the competition’s history and drawing international attention. His singing is known for clear diction, steady time, and restrained emotional depth. His repertoire ranges from jazz standards to works by composers such as Pharoah Sanders, bringing his Haitian heritage and contemporary experience into traditional forms.

His 2025 debut album as a leader, Open Up Your Senses, introduces his musical direction through classic songs and personal interpretations, with close interplay among contemporary jazz musicians. McDole has performed with Kenny Barron, Theo Croker, and NEA Jazz Master Gary Bartz, and continues to appear in New York and on international stages. His voice combines the composure of an old-school baritone with a younger musician’s spirit of exploration: intimate in ballads and supple, energetic, and full of life in rhythm-driven pieces.
